Golden Road Brewery ~ A look at the grand opening of Los Angeles's newest and largest craft brewery.
Tony Yanow of Tony's Darts Away and Mohawk Bend has just added a new piece to his empire, one more concerned with the production of beer than the consumption of it. Golden Road Brewing apart from being very new and very shiny is also enormous. The brewery's main building is simply cavernous and the industrial campus of brightly colored buildings was the perfect venue for its grand opening during LA Beer Week.
The brewery is located in Atwater Village just across the L.A. river. While it is literally on the wrong side of the tracks, Angelenos flocked to this industrial enclave last Sunday for the promise of beer.
Beer tickets in hand I set out to sample what had been made merely steps away. At launch the brewery is producing a Hefeweisen and the Point the Way IPA, but more varieties are on the way.
The scene in the brewery was all white concrete floors, shimmering stainless steel tanks, and lots of local beer lovers.
One of my favorite details was the chalkboard paint on the side of the tanks for easy note taking.
Other area breweries joined in on the fun to welcome Golden Road to the neighborhood. Stone, Eagle Rock Brewery, Hanger 24 and others were pouring throughout the day.
Some of the highlights were Stone's Vanilla Smoked Porter and a special Rye IPA from Hanger 24.
It wasn't all beer though. Flatiron offered its special brand of "Farm to truck" food.
Their bratwurst, which was delicious, seemed like the appropriate accompaniment to the great beer that was flowing freely all around. The best part of the day was not actually the brewery itself, but the warm reception it received. Los Angeles beer culture is flourishing and it was encouraging to see it out in force to celebrate Golden Road's inaugural voyage.
