The Pie Hole ~ Downtown Los Angeles's newest pie shop just wants to "do right by the pie." They have a cute shop full of a great selection of rotating handmade-from-scratch seasonal pies... and one filled with mac and cheese.
The Pie Hole is finally open. The latest addition to the blossoming Arts District area of Los Angeles, after a little tease at BloomfestLA and a soft open, is finally open for real. Their shop is located just a few blocks from the Little Tokyo metro station and across the street from the exotic sausages of Wurstküche. We stopped by on their opening day to check out what they had to offer and a slice or two (or 4) of pie.
Their little section of Traction Avenue has become quite the food spot. You get can a taste of New Orleans, Korean bbq, sausage, pie, and sandwiches all within a few steps of each other.
Their menu, which they envision changing weekly, is written on butcher paper. They have lots of great pie ideas, but are letting their suppliers, like local farmers' markets and butchers, help set the direction. Fresh produce makes such a big difference in the pie that it is crucial to focus on what's in season. That means of course that pumpkin pies, which they prepare completely from scratch, are just around the corner.
If you are a little more visual their pie case is an excellent road map to help you make a decision. We opted for the first 2 shelves and a little bit of the third.
Their savory pies were delicious. On opening day they offered a sort of carnitas empenada, a curried vegetable pie, and a mac n' cheese pie. While the mac n' cheeses's carb on carb on carb love fest was delicious the creamy spiced gravy of the curried vegetable pie won me over.
The lemon meringue pie led the wave of sweet pies that soon descended on our table. I loved its ratio of meringue to filling. The pie was well balanced, neither too tart nor too sweet, and the meringue was wonderfully moist like a marshmallow desperately trying to keep itself together.
They also offer a Southern Confetti pie along with a Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie with a pretzel crust. The latter is like eating the largest, richest Reese's peanut butter cup that you've ever imagined. The salty pretzel crust helps bring out the best in both the chocolate and the peanut butter. It is a delicious dense brick of fudge so a little goes a long way. The Southern Confetti is a pecan pie that has been invaded with shredded coconut. The result is a pecan pie with more texture and taste then the cloyingly sweet gelatinous goop with a few nuts sprinkled on top that you sometimes find.
They also offer whipped cream and ice cream to top whatever your heart desires.
The Pie Hole is a great addition to the neighborhood. I love their commitment to making things from scratch. They even made the table this pie is resting on. It's a family operation... a young couple, his mother, and their friends. They have all banded together to take their creativity and family recipes, gently whisk them all together, and bake until it's golden brown and delicious. I can't wait to follow along and see which pies they'll serve next. I've heard rumors of wonderful things like a chicken pot pie, and the faintest whisper of the greatest three words in the English language. Bacon. Fat. Crust.
