Sweet Potato Tots ~ Just one of the attractions at the One-Eyed Gypsy. Signature cocktails, specialty pizzas... and Skee-ball!

October 21st, 2011

Villains Tavern stole our hearts with their Bourbon Bacon Caramel Corn so I was eager to try their latest venture.  The One-Eyed Gypsy has taken over the space once occupied by Bordello and continued the history of one of the city's older bars.  It's located on 1st street just before the bridge and joins the ever expanding universe of Los Angeles's Little Tokyo/Arts District.  It may also be one of the few places to enjoy a drink and play Skee-ball across the street from a Buddhist temple.

The bar is so new that the paint was not even dry when I visited.
Inside I was immediately reminded of Villains... there are lots of great little details scattered throughout the bar.
The menu was designed with a little help from Echo Park's Brite Spot and offers a selection of pizzas and snacks which you order by checking the box.
They give you a number which means...
... that you can go and get in a few rounds of Skee-ball while you wait for your food to arrive.
They offer pizzas with a number of different toppings. You can get anything from tomato and basil to pulled pork.
The stars of the show though are their Sweet Potato Tots. They are served with a maple mayonaise which you really should try, but I preferred these delicious little nuggets un-dressed.
Their cocktail menu is broken up into High Rollers and Cheap Dates... so you are free to self assign.
The Ryumba is one of their more popular drinks and it's fantastic. The cucumber dominates and does a great job to mellow out the rye. The addition of a little chili pepper helps perk it up on your tongue. It's a great blend of smooth, cool, and hot.
Gypsy Juice is made with Plymouth Gin, citrus, sloe gin, and hard apple cider. The cider provides a nice background for this cocktail and helps it from becoming too sweet and citrusy. Its slight effervescence makes it reminiscent of a beer-tail.
This bar has no shortage of things to look at, and I'm sure I'll discover something new the next time I'm back.
The One-Eyed Gypsy's stage and the ever changing entertainment line-up also encourage repeat visits...
... as does the sirens's call of Skee-ball.
